Lucky Stabb / Childebeast Double CD Release Party!

Saturday, October 16th, 2010
viewer Twice the Fauxtown shiz hits the fan this upcoming October 22nd at Maxwell’s Music House (located at 220 King St. N. Waterloo, Ontario). Both Lucky Stabb and Childebeast simultaneously decide that “the fans have suffered long enough” and release their respective albums (Lucky Stabb: Its Now Or Later and Childebeast: Sous Le Maison) at Maxwell’s on the very same night. Confusing? Oh hells yeah! As many a fine advertisement has stated over the years “But wait…There’s more!” Yes, Childebeast and Lucky Stabb will be joined by The Axxxidentals and J.K. Phil Ose and… the spirit of rock ‘n roll (this is not a band). The tickets are $10 and you get your choice of CD. That’s powerful stuff…To buy your advance ticket, contact a member of Lucky Stabb or Childebeast TODAY.

UPDATE: Here are some pics of the show taken by our friend Harry Pulley. Also thanks to Carrie @ IRIS for having us on the radio earlier in the day, and Chris of Sex Dwarf for filling in at the last minute!

LAZU LIE ADDED TO FAUXTOWN BAND ROSTER

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010
lazulie1
Back last winter sometime, either late 2009 or early 2010, the musicians of Cambridge, ON-based band Nervous Wrecked and the musicians of Kitchener, ON-based band Childebeast decided somehow that they ought to try working as a larger and singular unit.

Not dismantling either of their former projects - on the contrary, Nervous Wrecked just released their second full length “Circles’ in September 2010 and Childebeast are lined up to release their second full length ‘Sous le maison’ on October 22nd 2010 - the six members dedicated time to first learn and rehearse each other’s songs all together, and then worked into the process of creating new songs from scratch.

Over the better part of this, the year of our Lord two thousand and ten, the group has rehearsed dozens of songs, some old but rearranged, and some brand new.

Eventually in the late summer the group was offered a show which prompted them to refine a set of nine songs - written by all six of the members either collectively or separately - and establish a band name.

And it was known as Lazu Lie.

Lazu Lie is in talks about recording an EP, but still unsure about which songs will be recorded and where, not to mention when it will be released. That’s as specific as I can be.

Lazu Lie is the latest band to be signed to FauxTown Records.

Lazu Lie is: GJ Stabbz, Young Coconut, Josh Braga, Joseph Gallo, Jr., Kevin Fraser, Matthew Davey

Grand River Orchestra Joins Fauxtown Records!

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
grandriverorchestra It began at daybreak, January 7th, 2010.  A lonely trumpet announced the arrival of Grand River Orchestra to Fauxtown Records.

A young messenger, dressed in medieval garb, was found unconscious at the portcullis of Fauxtown HQ.  A typical day in the tri-city area, it was snowing and the roads were bad.  The weary traveller had arrived prior to sunrise, and was quickly ushered inside when Fauxtown opened up its offices at their typical arrival time of 2:45pm.  He was given a mug of hot chocolate, and allowed to recuperate on the Brown Couch of Leisure.  His feathered cap layered thick with snow and his puffy pants soaked through, he eventually hobbled up to the secretary and handed him a sealed piece of parchment.  “Quite a storm out there.  Take this, I must be off!”

The parchment handed over contained the details of this new alliance…

“Grand River Orchestra, a Cambridge band known for their dense, textured sound and soulful jams, is now a part of the Fauxtown label,” read the parchment, “Look for them coming to rock a venue near you, and the release of an album in the near future!”

WELCOME GRAND RIVER ORCHESTRA!

Ben VanDyk reviews “Insufficient Funds”

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Holy moly. Hello, hello. I would like to introduce you to Young Coconut’s new long player, called Insufficient Funds. The songs that make up this art damaged, sprawling, rocking ‘n rolling album can sing for themselves, but, you know, sometimes a little talk helps everyone loosen up a little bit. And I suggest a little limbering up in order to enjoy this album. Think of it as stretching before you get out there and kick the ball around.

One of the most difficult tasks for anyone who makes music is managing expectations for your intended audience. After all, why should they listen? And it ain’t easy for listeners to make informed choices from all the mess that is available to them, given the lazy shorthand that is pervasive in rock and roll writing which depends on describing a new album or buzz band by using familiar touchstones. “The Specials meets Black Sabbath” they say, “Big Star meets the Clash meets Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet”.  Isn’t that missing the point, though?  Familiarity breeds contempt, people. Rock and roll is and was thrilling because it’s exotic, unsafe, even threatening. But rock and roll is at its most thrilling when its creators are cool enough to ride a bucking muse and let it lead.

This, I would say, brings us back to Young Coconut, and his album, Insufficient Funds. This album revels in off-kilter melodies, abstract lyrics, and zany hooks. It also relies on the performances of various guests who handle the lead vocal duties, guests from bands like Lucky Stabb, Childebeast, and World of Science, all of whom contribute to Young Coconut’s dream of an album. Not a disneyfied dream, but one with a scary id in full effect, where the unexpected waits in the stereophonic sounds.  For instance, “Did you see me?” is a clattering, full-on rock and roll track that doesn’t allow a few twisty rhythmic and textural changes get in the way of a little bit of fun verse-chorus-and-something-or-other. Without a breath it’s followed up by some noise and the gut stomping beat in “fifty cent carolinas.” And following that is the indie pop bounce of “Le$hark” which tells the story of an unrepentant criminal mastermind. This album isn’t perfect, and the seams show here and there, but that’s ok, because just like college basketball in the USA any of the missteps taken are more than forgiven for the moments of brilliance that result from sheer guts and determination.

The Approachables: On Sound Stage Mountain

Friday, October 9th, 2009
approachablesonsound_small We said we’d heard rumblings! And now, a knock on the door. What’s this? Like a cooing child in basket left by mysterious parents, like supply without demand, a fairly rare occurrence: a debut LP ten years after the fact? Somewhere, it seems, The Approachalbes are still toiling, no doubt rolled in soot and sweat to bring the world pop diamonds in the rough.

Now Fauxtown is happy to announce that anyone can go to the site and hear what all the fuss is about. Dare ye?
